Murray manufactures six different lawn mower models, and all of them have Briggs & Stratton engines. These engines feature a top-mounted recoil starter that you can remove without much trouble when you need to replace a broken cord. The most difficult part of the repair may be locating all the screws holding the starter to the engine. Most of them are in plain view, but, depending on the model, one or two may be out of sight, either on the muffler housing or connected to the gas tank. Once they are out, the housing lifts off.
1
Set the lawnmower on a level surface and pull the boot off the spark plug to prevent the engine from accidentally firing up.
2
Unscrew the three or four screws holding the starter cover, using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the cover.
3
Locate the screws holding the starter assembly to the engine and remove them. You'll probably need a socket wrench and a 3/8-inch socket to do this. One of the screws may be holding another part, such as the gas tank or oil dipstick. If you have to remove the gas tank, just set it on the mower deck and avoid disconnecting the fuel line.
4
Lift the recoil starter off the engine and turn it over. Pull out what's left of the old cord with needle-nose pliers and clean the inside of the starter housing with a rag.
5
Measure out a new length of cord with a tape measure. Melt both ends of the cord with a lighter and roll the melted ends with your fingers to make points. This makes threading the cord through holes easier.
6
Wind the starter pulley until it feels fully wound -- about six or seven complete turns -- and back it off a little to line up the hole in the hub with the one in the starter housing. Insert a screwdriver through one of the spokes and through the louvers in the housing to hold it steady.
7
Feed the cord through the holes and tie a single knot in the end. Slip the handle onto the other end of the cord and tie it off. Holding the cord firmly, release the pulley and let it unwind slowly. The cord will wrap around it as it unwinds.
8
Replace the housing on the engine and reassemble anything you took apart to get it off. Replace the starter cover, then reconnect the spark plug.
